The million-dollar question! It’s hard to give a direct and certain answer (unless you have a crystal ball 🔮).

If there were a magic formula, all doctors would use the same one and recommend the same thing.

So what we do and recommend is based on studies, our experience, and results can vary from one patient to another. That story that “it’s your skin” is quite true, but there are some care measures that can help the scar be as discreet as possible.

In surgery, we seek to minimize trauma to the skin, close tissues in several layers, reduce skin tension (which is not always possible, after all, we want “tight” skin, right? This generates tension). Use materials that reduce the inflammatory response of the lesion.

At the end of surgery, we can use surgical glue, as in the video, microporation, or other types of dressings that reduce tension and improve epithelialization. Later on: silicone strips, oils, or gels that improve the quality and appearance of scars.

But patient care is essential, avoiding fatty foods, flour, and sugar, crustaceans, among others. Not making more effort than necessary before the time, maintaining hygiene to avoid infections, using a compression garment as recommended, all this helps. But at the end, there is still the individuality of the organism that produces scars differently in different places and phases of life! (baby vs teenager vs elderly).
