ETIP: Late Onset Intermittent and Persistent Edema. This is a late adverse reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers that is well described in the literature and known by the medical community, especially experienced injectors. It is rare individually, but since I have many patients with fillers, frequently one or another has an ETIP event. AND TODAY IT IS ME AND I AM HERE TO TALK A LITTLE TO YOU ABOUT IT! 👉🏼 Industrially produced hyaluronic acid is biologically identical to ours, but it is made through bacterial substrates. It is observed that the occurrence of ETIP almost always has an infectious trigger, especially when bacterial and of the upper airways. Thus, one of the theories for the formation of ETIP is that our antibodies, when defending us from some infection, also attack the fillers through an immune-mediated cross-reaction. I perceive in clinical practice that this is more common in lips and lower eyelids, but it can occur in any location where there is hyaluronic acid of any type. Calm down because it is not a direct attack on the fillers, it will not make them go away faster, and everything will return to normal at the end of the infection. Treatment? Cold compresses and anti-inflammatories and cure of the infectious process. Does this take away my peace? No! Does it change my routine? Not at all! Is it a reason for me to consider not doing fillers anymore??? MUCH LESS! In my opinion, the benefits of hyaluronic acid are much greater than one or another ETIP in life! 😉
