Did you see yourself in these photos, or do you know someone with a similar appearance? This illustrates a disease called lipedema, which causes a disproportionate accumulation of fat, primarily in the limbs. Depending on the type, it can affect the upper or lower limbs. This is a different kind of fat because it does not respond to conventional weight loss measures. A person may lose weight in many areas, but the fat distribution and proportion in the limbs remain the same. It is an inflammatory disease that predominantly affects women and is triggered by hormones. Therefore, it is very common for it to develop after puberty. It can also be triggered by a more inflammatory diet. The good news is that there is treatment, both clinical and surgical, in which I am a specialist. The surgical treatment consists of tumescent liposuction of these regions. We perform liposuction respecting the anatomy of the legs to restore both their shape and function, because many women cannot wear boots when they have this disease, without having to carry a lot of weight to walk or perform physical activities. It is as if they were doing all their activities wearing a shin guard with extra weight. It is fat that can be painful. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the treatment, of course, involves several professionals. The person must undergo clinical treatment, keep it under control, adjust their diet and lifestyle, but the surgical treatment brings great improvement in quality of life, improving both the aesthetic and functional aspect of the region.
